Behind the Number

What moves the price of cardamom

Most Indian cardamom is sold through e-auctions run under the Spices Board, including at the Spices Park in Puttady. The auction average sets the tone for the whole market.

Weather

A weak monsoon or a long dry spell means fewer pods, and prices climb quickly.

Season

Rates tend to soften at the height of picking and firm up when stocks run low.

Global demand

Festival buying in the Gulf and supply from other growing countries both pull on prices.

Grade and size

Every extra half-millimetre of pod size adds to the rate, as the card above shows.

A Word of Advice

Why the cheapest quote is rarely the cheapest

A low price per kilo can hide a lot: mixed sizes, hollow pods, extra moisture that you pay for by weight, or dust at the bottom of the bag. By the time you have sorted it out, the saving is gone.

Our rates are for clean, correctly graded, properly dried cardamom. Compare them against a sample — not against a number on a screen.

Market Terms

Words you will hear when buying cardamom

E-auction
The online auctions where most Indian cardamom is first sold. Their average price sets the market's direction.
Average price
The mean rate across all lots sold at an auction. News reports quote this figure.
Bold
A trade word for large pods, usually 8 mm and above.
Rejection
Pods sorted out for marks or splits and sold for grinding at a lower price.
Litre weight
How much one litre of pods weighs. Heavier means fuller pods with more seed.
Moisture
Water left in the dried pod. Too much and the cardamom can spoil; you also pay for water by weight.
Questions

About pricing

How our rates work, in plain words.

Why do prices change every day?

Cardamom is traded through daily auctions. Supply, weather and demand shift the auction average, and our rates follow it.

Is the price on this page final?

No, it is today's guide rate. We confirm the final price when you share the grade, quantity and delivery location.

Do you give a better rate for large orders?

Often, yes. Share your quantity and we will quote accordingly.

Why is the export rate different?

Export lots need different packing, extra checks and documentation, which are reflected in the rate.
